What is
“Youth Voices…Youth Issues”?
This is a
student-led follow up program for teens who participated in
NCCJ’s Hate in the Hallways Youth Leadership Summit and/or
Anytown Summer Leadership Institute. This initiative brings
social justice issues into the classroom, allowing students to
explore life issues and acquire skills to that will benefit them
both inside and outside of the classroom. This program fosters
values that support the understanding and appreciation of
individual differences.
The Process
This is a
three step process.
First, participants undergo a two day training
process with NCCJ where they develop new
views of themselves,
an understanding of their own prejudices, a new appreciation for
the cultural backgrounds of others, and knowledge of the racial
problems which continue to confront our society. Second,
students learn facilitation skills and how to lead panel
discussions in their schools to address relevant issues.
Finally, the discussions sparked by the two day training with
NCCJ continue in the schools throughout the academic year with
students leading panel discussions on topics such as historical
events, economic development, and current events and forming
practical solutions to these problems.
Goals
of NCCJ’s “Youth Voices…Youth Issues”
As a
follow-up program, this initiative allows students to bring
their new skills to the classroom. Students that participate in
these programs work with their peers and faculty to implement
activities on campus to explore youth issues. The participants
creatively use their voices and new perspectives instead of
violence to build awareness and resolve conflict.
